Belfry of Ghent Rebrand
BRANDING I SCHOOL PROJECT
For this assignment, we were tasked to rebrand one of the “Historische Huizen” (Historical Houses) of Ghent. One of these is the Belfort or “Belfry”.
Being the most iconic staple of the city’s skyline, it was hard not to pick it and do it proper justice with a brand redesign fit for the 21st century.
In its medieval role, the Belfry of Ghent served as a lookout tower for fires and sieges. Its monolithic presence in the city landscape and the watchful eyes of the guards above meant that the citizens of Ghent could live their lives in peace.
Its historic role was a great starting point for choosing the shapes and colors that were to become the new brand for the Belfort.
A flyer template designed to be adaptable to different images and texts.
The angled lines in the logo form the silhouette of the tower’s upper floors, replicating what a viewer sees when looking up at the tower from below.
To choose the color palette for this project I took a similar approach. When one looks up at the tower from below, all one can see is the top of the building and the endless blue sky. Having such a behemoth watch over the city provides a comforting and secure feeling. As such, the color blue became the staple color in this project.
